“What’s included?”

Sounds obvious, doesn’t it?

Here’s where people get caught out. Two quotes can both say “new concrete driveway”, but one includes excavation, spoil removal, reinforcement and sealing while the other doesn’t.

Don’t compare the number at the bottom.

Compare what’s being done for that number.

Ask what happens to the old concrete, excess soil and rubbish too. You don’t want to discover there’s a pile of broken driveway sitting beside your house after everyone leaves.

How Are You Preparing the Ground?

If there’s one question we’d want homeowners asking more often, it’s this.

Concrete gets all the attention because that’s what you see.

The base underneath does most of the hard work.

One thing we’ve noticed around Adelaide is how dramatically ground conditions can change between suburbs—and sometimes between properties on the same street.

Reactive clay can move considerably through long dry summers and wetter periods.

If the ground isn’t prepared and compacted properly, making the concrete prettier won’t save it.

Ask what’s going underneath your slab and how it’s being compacted.

A concreter should be able to explain that without dancing around the answer.

What Reinforcement Are You Using?

Most people assume concrete is strong enough by itself.

Concrete is certainly strong under compression.

Movement is another story.

Steel reinforcement helps control what happens as the ground moves, loads change and the concrete naturally expands and contracts.

Ask what reinforcement is being used and where it’ll sit inside the slab.

We’ve seen mesh lying practically on the ground instead of being properly supported.

At that point, it’s not doing the job you thought you paid for.

How Will Water Get Away?

This one’s boring.

Until your garage floods.

Adelaide doesn’t get constant rain, which actually makes drainage easier to forget. Then a heavy downpour arrives and suddenly you’re watching water travel exactly where you didn’t want it.

After doing hundreds of driveways, we’ve learnt to watch where water wants to go before worrying about where we’d like it to go.

There’s a difference.

Ask about falls, drainage points and where runoff will finish.

Water always finds the low spot.

Make sure that isn’t your garage door.

Where Will the Joints Go?

Concrete moves.

Heat it up during an Adelaide summer afternoon and it’ll expand. Cool it down and it’ll contract. Add ground movement underneath and there’s even more happening.

Control joints give that movement somewhere planned to occur.

Ask where they’ll go before pouring starts.

The funny thing is, joint placement affects appearance as well as performance. Random-looking cuts across a beautiful driveway aren’t something you want to discover afterwards.

Good planning makes the joints look intentional.

What Happens Around Trees?

Got a big gum nearby?

Mention it.

Tree roots don’t care about your driveway.

We’ve repeatedly seen established trees cause problems around paths and slabs because everyone looked at what was above ground and forgot what was happening underneath.

Cutting roots isn’t automatically the answer either. Trees need to remain stable and healthy.

This needs thinking through before excavation begins.

How Will the Finish Age?

Don’t just ask what it’ll look like when it’s finished.

Ask what it’ll look like after five years.

Exposed aggregate, coloured concrete and other decorative finishes can age beautifully, but they’ll change. Sunlight, traffic, dirt, gum leaves and weather all have their say.

Coastal suburbs bring their own conditions as well.

If somebody promises it’ll look exactly the same forever, we’d be cautious.

Outdoor concrete lives outdoors.

That’s the deal.

When Can We Actually Use It?

This question saves arguments.

Ask when you can walk on it, when vehicles can return and whether there are different instructions depending on conditions.

Don’t assume because concrete looks hard that it’s ready.

It gains strength progressively.

We’ve seen people itching to put the car back because the surface looks finished.

Give it the time your concreter recommends.

What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?

Ask before handing over the deposit.

What workmanship is covered?

What isn’t?

Who do you contact?

A professional should give you straight answers.

Almost every difficult conversation in this trade becomes harder when expectations weren’t clear at the beginning.

And that’s really the point of these questions.

You’re not interrogating your concreter.

You’re finding out how they think.

Anyone can tell you concrete will be poured on Tuesday.

The person you want working at your home can explain what’s happening underneath it, where the water will travel, how movement will be managed and what compromises your particular site might require.

Listen to those answers.

Twenty years later, we’ve found they’re usually more revealing than the quote itself.
