Rebuilt at a new location in 2001, the National Theater of Budapest has become a national symbol since its completion. The building was constructed at a record speed and was ready in 15 months. It is located by the Danube riverbank, next to the Palace of Arts. The central part of the theater comprises the auditorium, with an almost circular ground-plan, and a studio theatre. It has an open-air stage. The area of the theatre is 20,844 square metres.
Classic pieces of literature and drama are performed in a modern way in the National Theater. Several guest plays as well as concerts and other cultural programs are regularly held there.
