Danube is Europe’s second longest international waterway. It originates from the Black forest of Germany, passes through ten Western and Eastern European countries before emptying into the Black Sea. It has 17 big islands, Csepel Island and Margaret Island in Budapest.
The river flows through Hungary and it separates Budapest into two parts: Buda and Pest. The Danube bend near Budapest (Visegrád, Esztergom) is one of the nicest geographical areas of Hungary. The Budapest section of the river, the bridges are major touristic attractions of the city. The view of the Pest riverbank is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Danube river is also the subject of various artworks, including music, paintings, novels and films. The most famous is probably ‘On the Beautiful Blue Danube’, a popular waltz by Austrian Composer Johann Strauss.
